How to Use a Sonic Electric Toothbrush: A Step-by-Step Guide

Use light pressure and guide your sonic toothbrush methodically around your mouth. Start with the instructions for your exact handle: brushing modes and recommended movements can differ between models.

1. Check the handle and brush head

Match the replacement head to your handle before brushing. A similar-looking connector is not enough to confirm compatibility. Use the model printed on the handle or its documentation, then check the product's compatible-model list.

For Brushmo handles, BM01 uses the standard click-on family, BM02 uses E-Series screw-on heads, and BM03 uses BM638 compact or BM648 full-size kids' heads. These connections are not interchangeable.

2. Position and guide the brush gently

Apply fluoride toothpaste as directed on its packaging. Place the head against your teeth before switching on to limit splashing. For Philips Sonicare, the manufacturer recommends positioning the bristles toward the gumline at about 45 degrees, applying light pressure, and moving slowly with small back-and-forth movements. 3. Cover every tooth surface

Work around the outside, inside and chewing surfaces. A timer can help you pace the session; do not finish an area simply because the brush has vibrated there briefly. The ADA recommends brushing twice daily for two minutes with a soft-bristled brush. ADA brushing guidance.

4. Spit out excess toothpaste

Avoid rinsing your mouth with water immediately afterward: this washes away the fluoride left by the toothpaste. Rinse the brush head instead. NHS guidance on brushing and rinsing.

5. Care for the brush and plan replacements

Follow the handle's cleaning and charging instructions. Check bristles regularly; the ADA advises replacement every three to four months, or earlier when they become frayed. Do not assume a handle can be submerged or that a brush head can be sterilized with heat. ADA toothbrush care.

Common questions

Does more pressure mean a better clean?

No. Use the light pressure specified by the manufacturer; if the handle has a pressure alert, respond to it. Persistent discomfort is a reason to ask your dental professional about technique and brush choice.
